You never know, I guess you just don’t know
November 26th, 2010 • News

We’ve been following electro-pop artist Primary 1 (aka Joe Flory) ever since his debut single ‘Hold Me Down’ dropped on Erol Alkan’s Phantasy Sound label in 2008. A show of his at Proud Galleries, also in 2008, supporting Ladyhawke and The Death Set, was one of our favourite performances that year.
Latterly singed to Atlantic, he’s been patiently developing his sound, seemingly waiting for the best moment to embark on the big push into the public’s consciousness. Releases have occurred along the way, notably a split 7″ with French duo The Shoes, a duet with Nina Persson of The Cardigans called ‘The Blues’, an odds and ends compilation called ‘Mess Detective’ and this summer’s hook filled juggernaut of a single ‘Princess’.
As we reach the end of 2010, P1 has finally announced details of his eagerly anticipated long-player (out in February 2011, or thereabouts) as well as a single to precede it, entitled ‘Never Know’ (out 29 November). On the evidence of this, it’s been well worth the wait. Fizzing with energy and colour (not least in the video itself), and containing one of the most infectious, memorable hooks we’ve heard in some time, we wouldn’t be surprised if this ends up being the soundtrack to next summer.
In any case, expect to see P1 on a big support tour / festival near you soon, as the campaign to get him into households begins in earnest.

Laissez Faire Club Christmas Party at Queen Of Hoxton: 14 December
November 18th, 2010 • News

It’s been a great 2010 for Laissez Faire Club – we started off the year showcasing three great acts at Notting Hill Arts Club’s RoTa event, one of which, Ice Black Birds, became the first ever signing to LFC Records. Along the way, we’ve DJ’ed in New York and Paris, as well as hosted hotly-tipped Let’s Buy Happiness’ debut London show and put on a handful of memorable evenings at Camden’s Lock Tavern and The Flowerpot (RIP).
The good news for you lot is that we’re celebrating all of this with a special Christmas knees-up at The Queen Of Hoxton on Tuesday 14 December. Headlining will be Nottingham’s superb Dog Is Dead, who describe themselves as ‘Louis Armstrong lost in disco’ playing ‘uplifting pop for jazz junkies and choir folk’. An enticing proposition we’re sure you’ll agree. This will be the band’s final show of the year, and they’ll be treading the boards at Laissez Faire Club just prior to an appearance in the final episode of the current series of Skins early next year.
Support comes from our very own aforementioned psychedelic blues revivalists Ice Black Birds, who’ll be rounding off a great year of their own, one that has seen them wow audiences from Manchester to Paris to Utrecht. More bands will be announced very shortly. In any case, the lineup is already not one to be missed. We expect considerable things from both these acts in 2011.
Advance tickets are a snip at £5 (it’ll be more on the day of the show), and can be booked here. If you’re coming, please let us know by RSVP’ing to the Facebook event, where you’ll also find more details on the show.

LFC DJs in Paris this weekend
November 11th, 2010 • News

Laissez Faire Club DJs will be hitting continental Europe this Saturday night! We’re spinning records at Paris’ wonderful Fleche d’Or venue, alongside We Are Scientists, The Boxer Rebellion and our own Ice Black Birds. We’ll be in charge of the wheels of steel before, in-between and after the bands, until 1.45am. We’re sure you’ll agree it’s one hell of a lineup. If you’re coming to the show, make sure you get down for 8.45pm, which is when IBB hit the stage to kick of proceedings.
This is what the venue had to say about us:
We couldn’t put in better ourselves. See you there?
