Nelsonville Music Festival Preview: Lucius

The Nelsonville Music Festival is less than a week away and we’ll be doing our best to preview some of those bands a little less familiar to the masses. And to kick things off we’d like to reintroduce the world to Lucius.

When we found out Lucius was playing the Nelsonville Music Festival, a wry smile may have eked out. Meeting the band atop a soap box at SXSW back in 2011, it  was immediately obvious that they were very special. We invited Lucius to play the RethinkPopMusic CMJ and Northside Festival showcases and they’ve since grown into a melodic force.

Categorizing Lucius into some sort of genre would be absurd. The songwriting is easily digested, instrumentation is appropriately intricate and the combined voices of Jess and Holly are bound for individual stardom. Folk influences peak in and out of the new recordings, but if you can find earlier demo tracks, you’ll hear brilliance the likes of Dolly Parton. And speaking of Dolly, the following NPR Tiny Desk performance just so happens to start with said track.

So, if you’re coming out to the Nelsonville Music Festival next weekend, try and see their Main Stage show at 6:00pm on Saturday… or better yet, check them out at 9:15 in the No Fi Cabin as I’m sure it will be more representative of the video above.
