New LFC show announced: The Social, 16 May

We’re back in action on the live front in mid May, when we host an incredible international lineup on the 16th of the month at The Social on Little Portland Street.

Headlining the event are one of our favourite new bands, London’s Channel Cairo – they opened up the second night of our fourth birthday shows in January with such aplomb, we’ve invited them back to do it all over again. Think big, haunting, piano-led opuses, with hints of Jeff Buckley and The Cure. They’re a band very much on an upward trajectory, and as ever, we’re giving you a early head’s up to come and join the party.

Main support are the wonderful Bravestation from Toronto. This show will be their first ever appearance in the UK (and also outside of Canada) at the start of a maiden tour of the British Isles. Generating a bit of an online buzz, their dreamy, otherworldly sound has drawn comparisons to the likes of Yeasayer, Local Natives and Foals. We’d speculate this is a band you’ll kick yourself about missing as and when they go on to bigger things. Their debut 2010 EP below is FREE to download – acquaint yourselves now.

From the other side of the globe are Deep Sea Arcade (Sydney, Australia), who’ll be opening the evening. Again, local and national buzz in their homeland has spawned a debut international tour, and we’re delighted to have pinned them down for one of the dates, which also includes The Great Escape Festival in Brighton and Primavera Sound in Barcelona. Sound wise, this is classic, timeless pop, with hints of psychedelia and trip hop (their own words) – Beatles, Monkees, Beach Boys, all over in three minutes or under. It’ll probably transport you to Bondi Beach for at least half-an-hour or so in any case, and is a trip we can’t wait to go on.

Ice Black Birds – “22:22″

If you weren’t already aware, Ice Black Birds released their third single – the follow up to last summer’s LFC Records release, “As Birds We’d Be Fine” – last Monday 21st March.

Out on their own label, it’s called “22:22″ and has been a staple of their live set for the last twelve months or so – if you’ve seen them before, it’s the hard and fast one that reminds you of the youthful abandon captured on Kings Of Leon’s or The Vines’ debut LPs, all raspy vocals, pounding drums and charging guitars. The B-side, “SSW”, is more the more anthemic, big stage friendly number of the two, with an insistent guitar lick bound to get stuck inside your head upon first listen.

Fresh from their maiden Stateside tour, which took in shows in NYC (including a gig at the illustrious Mercury Lounge) and Austin for the SXSW Festival, the Birds are now back in the UK and gearing up for the summer festival season. If you’re in London or Brighton in the next week or so, the band play a Lyle And Scott curated event at XOYO on Cowper Street this Thursday 31st, and are launching the aforementioned release with a free entry show at The Green Door Store by the sea on Saturday evening (2 April).

If you’ve stumbled across the band through their recent international high-jinks, and like what you hear, it’s worth noting that we have a very small number of “As Birds We’d Be Fine” 7″s (to date the band’s only vinyl release) left over – see our label page for ordering links and info. Introducing: Reptar

One of the bands no doubt making waves at SXSW this week are Athens, Georgia’s Reptar. The quartet have been around for only a short time, and already look like being on the verge of breaking out of their hometown scene, thus following in the footsteps of their city’s musical torchbearers REM.

This is unsurprising, really – fans of weird indie bands like Animal Collective, Passion Pit, MGMT, Modest Mouse and Wild Beasts will most likely find something in Reptar’s no-holds-barred, left-of-centre party electro racket to capture their attention.

Indeed, Animal Collective’s producer (on 2009′s critically lauded Merriweather Post Pavillion) Ben H. Allen came across the band and liked what he heard so much, he produced and put out a 7″ (‘Cannabis Canyon’ / ‘Houseboat Babies’) on his label Make Records Not Bombs last year. He’s also credited as being behind the desk on their forthcoming EP, ‘Oblange Fizz Y’all’, which sees the light of day on US indie label Quality Faucet shortly.

One of the tracks on there, ‘Stuck In My ID’, stopped us in our tracks when we heard the demo version of it a couple of months back. Now, Allen’s production gives it a bit of added depth and fizz which should see it have much the same effect on many others throughout the course of 2011. Check it out below.

Dog Is Dead: ‘Hands Down’ (acoustic session for Crack In The Road)

Before headlining our debut Manchester show at The Castle Hotel last week (3 March), Dog Is Dead performed an acoustic session for our friends over at Crack In The Road in the upstairs room of the venue.

One of the songs they stripped down, ‘Hands Down’, was a highlight of their set later on in the evening – and displays their already impressive grasp of harmony, melody and hooks. It also recalls a good number of lauded acts of the last few years: Local Natives, Fleet Foxes, Mystery Jets and Mumford And Sons are just some names that spring to mind – a possible reason for the sudden outbreak of Dog Is Dead fever within the UK music industry. At the time of writing they remain unsigned, a status we don’t expect to last for too much longer.

The aforementioned track is sure to be omnipresent during the forthcoming summer festival season too, a large number of which they’re due to appear at. So learn the words now and look all smug when you’re standing in a field somewhere in the UK later on this year, alongside a whole bunch of boozed up lads waiting for the start of Kasabian’s set.
