Railroad Earth at the Newport Music Hall 2-11-15

Great night of music over at the Newport Music Hall with Railroad Earth. I had forgotten how much I enjoyed this band. It has been some time since I got to catch one of their shows. Here are a few of the pictures from the night, you can see the entire gallery here: Railroad Earth Newport Music Hall 2-11-15

The War On Pinback

Pinback and The War on Drugs Play Columbus on 9/17/14

Ok, so there’s no war on Pinback, but according to Stereogum, Sun Kil Moon has declared war on The War on Drugs.  Anyways, because 9/17/14 is the 5 year anniversary since we launched RethinkPopMusic in NYC, we are feeling a bit nostalgic. So on one of the best music nights in the history of Columbus, OH (unconfirmed) who should you see?

Well, here’s The War on Drugs song you probably know:

It’s a great song and if you know the history of the band then I’m wasting my breath. However, if you are unfamiliar with The War on Drugs it might be in your best interested to catch them next time in town.

Now, if you’re a Pinback “fan” you probably know this song:

But what you probably don’t know, is that Pinback plays their “hits” fast… double time fast.

Who are we going to see? Both!

Portugal. The Man and GROUPLOVE Pics | The LC

Despite local dipshit, fear mongering meteorologist Jim Ganahl and his ever-present impending weather apocalypses, Tuesday night at The LC turned out to be an absolutely gorgeous evening. Which if you’ve had the pleasure to see Portugal. The Man and GROUPLOVE on the Honda Civic Tour you know the weather can make or break those wicked awesome lasers and projections.

Anyways, despite Honda downgrading the budget they pour into this experiential branding campaign (remember 2006 and the Black Eyed Peas?) at least they’re booking bands that appeal to the audience actually capable of purchasing a car (age demo). And with this being the third to last stop of an assumed exhausting tour… well at least for Portugal. The Man who has dealt with the occasional bottle throw from a GROUPLOVIN’ tween twat… the bands only kinda-sorta appeared overtly lethargic .

Portugal. The Man played an expected set thick with wailing guitars and falsetto vocals, focusing less on the hits and more on the integrated cover.

Possibly in an attempt to showoff his lighter side, Mr. Man performed a spot-on cover of It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia’s “Dayman” to an audience that sadly didn’t react. However, when the hit “So American” transitioned into Oasis’ “Don’t Look Back In Anger” the fuckers went buckwild, go figure.

GROUPLOVE played next, I saw them back in 2011 for the record release show at that shithole Tammany Hall in NYC… and that’s all I have to say about that. Here are some photos:
