The Vanguard are ready to “POP”

I once wore a homemade, form-fitting, pink t-shirt proclaiming “I have potential.” And when I say “once” I mean I wore it to my college graduation ceremony. Not only did I pose for pictures in front of Old Glory holding my diploma in the braggadocios couture, now that picture resides on my sister’s desk. Now this wouldn’t of much concern, but this desk is located in the catholic high school where she teaches. Regardless, I wish I still had the shirt because, unlike myself, The Vanguard could wear it with sincerity.

Friday night I ventured out to Williamsburg to see The Vanguard, who just so happen to be the newest member of the RethinkPopMusic family, at Cameo. Despite resembling an art gallery more than a music venue, Cameo provided The Vanguard with an intimate setting to showcase their new material, which is currently being recorded.

The Vanguard’s sound focuses on Aaron Barr’s voice, which has as much range as the band has diversity (each hails from a different country Serbia, U.S., Poland and Argentina). Every song is a potential sing-along as well as a dance-off and with a “Carpe Diem” decree his lyrics, it doesn’t seem like that will be changing anytime soon. Each song seems to be scattered with harmonies, complicated bridges and big choruses with one picky audience member expressing Hall and Oates comparisons between songs. While the musicianship and songwriting aren’t necessarily at the level of Hall and Oates… The Vanguard certainly has potential.

Check out the video for Rio and be on the lookout for the new tracks.
